Say cheese, say Holland! The Cheese Market in Alkmaar is held every year from the start of April until the start of September on Friday mornings. There cheeses are still sold in the old-fashioned way. After a clap of hands, the carriers, in their traditional costumes, take the cheeses on barrows after the lot is weighed at the official scales.
We proceed to the Schermerhorn windmills, that were used in the 17th century to drain the local lakes and protect the inhabitants from the menace of the water. We visit the inside of such an impressive colossus. On our return we see the historical town Edam, famous for its homonymous cheese. During our visit to a cheese farm, we learn about the production of this typically Dutch delicacy and we taste many different kinds of it.
