This guided tour shows you the typical Dutch countryside of polders and small canals on the way to the 'Zaanse Schans', a well known spot on the Zaan River with historical windmills.(don’t forget your camera). Zaandam was the worlds largest industrial zone back in the 17th century, with over a 1000 windmills. Czar Peter The Great of Russia was an apprentice here on one of the many shipbuilding yards. We will be visiting a wooden shoe and clog factory here.
The next stop are the world-famous fishing villages of Volendam and Marken - on the coast of the former Zuiderzee (now called IJsselmeer). With its typical green wooden houses and locals dressed in their traditional costumes. On our way back we will make a visit to one of the very few cheese farms left, where cheese still is made in the traditional way for many centuries. Included in this excursion is a boat trip from Volendam to Marken, a former island that is now connected to the main land.
